Mobile sales grow in India by 20% with Nokia on top

When on one hand Nokia was facing tough competition from companies like Apple in the Smartphone business, the company has managed to retain the top position in the Indian mobile market. The sales have grown by almost 20% and Nokia has a crucial role to play in that.
In 2011, there were 183.4 million mobile units in India. The figure had reached 221.6 million units last year – with a growth of 20%. The market share for Nokia has been the highest – at 21.8%. If the total sales were to be bifurcated, there were 206.4 million units of featurephones, while that of Smartphones, the sales were of 15.2%.
Samsung came in second with a market share of 13.7 per cent. With 6.6% of market share, Micromax finished on the third spot. As far as the market in India is concerned, the featurephones dominate this market. There is one certain indication that India is by and large the market for new phones.
However, the presence of featurephones makes the bulk of the contribution to the shipments as against the upgrades or any replacements.

Nokia targeting Indian market with Lumia 510

Nokia is trying to target an emerging market like India with their latest launch of the Nokia Lumia 510. The Lumia 510 is an internet-ready windows based phone. The best thing is that the phone costs about $199 – slightly more than Rs. 10,000. As the phone is built to target the emerging markets, it would be sold in India, China and some countries in the Latin American region.
The Lumia 510 stands at the eighth position in the Lumia series that run of Windows OS. A lot of hopes for Nokia are pinned on the success of Lumia 510. Actually, the company is making efforts to gain back the traction with the help of this phone. The situation does not look too cozy for Nokia as they have already lost about $1.26 billion for third quarter.

The sales of this range of Smartphones came down from 2.9 million units from where it was about 4 million units in the preceding quarter. Life became difficult for Nokia after iPhone was launched in 2007. Until then Nokia was the undisputed leader in the world of Smartphone market. In the last five years, the devices with Apple’s iOS as well as Google’s Android have dominated the market.
The Nokia Lumia 510 is a combination of Windows Phone as well as a low-priced gadget, said Mr. Jo Harlow, who is the executive vice president of Nokia's smart devices business.

Nokia brings down Smartphone prices before new launch

Nokia has been facing a horrid time in the market. And now as they are going to launch the Smartphone, they have decided to cut down on the prices already. The cut is expected to be anywhere between 10% and 15%. The prices will be brought down on the top two models in the Smartphone range.

The price cut is done in the hope of boosting the sales. The price of Lumia 800 was cut by around 15% and that of Lumia 900 by 10%. The price cut has been brought into effect for the European region. This month the company has already launched a couple of Lumia phones – the Lumia 820 and the Lumia 920.

Experts and buffs in the field take this launch as one of the most important for the company and feel that the very existence of Nokia is based on these two phones. However, the phones can be brought in the market only in November. That means the company has to make do with the older phones for the entire October, which might prove to be a challenging task.
Life has indeed been tough for Nokia. The company has lost as many as $3.86 billion in a year and a half. Moreover, Nokia also had to face tough competition from other companies and fell behind in the race.
