OpenOffice – your open source for MS Office option

OpenOffice is one of the freeware software around that is also open source. It is a good replacement for the good old MS Office. Both OpenOffice and MS Office serve more or less the same features.

The Similarities
Text editor like ‘Word’, ‘Powerpoint’ to make professional presentations, ‘Excel’ spreadsheets along with the formulae to help you carry out complex mathematical operations.
The good thing about OpenOffice is that it is entirely free. You don't have to pay a dime to get it. Secondly, it is easily available to download it from the web. Just Google it and you are done.

OpenOffice
Microsoft Office
Functions

Writer
MS Word
Carries out the text editing fuctions

Impress
Powerpoint
Creates slides and presentations

Calc
Excel
Carries out Excel fuctions

Draw
Publisher
Synonymous with Desktop Publishing

In Other Words
What MS Word is to MS Office, Writer is to OpenOffice. The way you can make, arrange and give effects to slides and make presentations through PowerPoint, you can work equally efficiently in Impress. Calc and Excel are almost the same in both the suites and when it comes to desktop publishing then there is similarities between Draw and Publisher.

Apart from this, as there are options for you to choose options in the Office Suite for custom installation, you will find the same in OpenOffice.

However, in spite of all these similarities, there is a difference between OpenOffice and MS Office. Or in fact let us say, Microsoft showed why they are better yet. In MS Word you have the options of working with the .docx and .doc formats. However, in OpenOffice, there are only the .docx files at your disposal.

A $35 Android tablet as means of education: Indian Govt

In one of its firsts, the government of India will on Wednesday launch a gadget – a $35 Google Android tablet dedicated to the education sector. The tablet will have a 7-inch touchscreen. It will run on Android 2.2 mobile OS, says the report. The report also adds that, the tablet will have Wi-Fi and multimedia apart from videoconferencing capacities.
Some of the features of the Android tablet are as follows:
The gadget will have an accurate battery power of 3 hours (180 minutes). It will come in 2 USB ports. The device is blessed with 32GB expandable memory. However, the downline in the otherwise excellent device is the 256MB RAM (Random Access Memory). The lower RAM might play down the performance of the mobile phone.
The tablet has been christened as Akash, which means the sky. As this experiment is for the educational purposes, the tablets will not be sold over the counter as done in the market. However, universities and colleges will sell the tablets to their students. The tablet will see a first batch of 500 devices. In the course of time, the production of the gadget is likely to pick up.
It is not only in India, but there are other countries too, that are making efforts to make such touchscreen devices available to their students at lower costs. In the near future, we might even see a solar-powered tablet targeted for rural villages as Nanyang Technological University, Singapore is busy with the work currently.

QR codes - An overview

The 3Ds in QR codes

QR codes have a lot to do with the 3Ds. Well, it is not the 3D images we are talking about, but it actually is density, display and functional distance. It will be a little complicated to start off, but it is pretty simple. If the density of the codes increases without the change in the display size, the functional distance size decreases. On the other hand, if the code density reduces but the display size remains static then the functional distance goes up. This means that there is an inverse relation between the code density and the functional distance.
In short the density matters the most for QR codes.
QR code optimization
QR code for the URL of the English Wikipedia Mobile main page
Two inputs play an important role in determining the density variable of the QR codes. The first is the number of characters being encoded and the second is these characters being multiplied by the error correction settings. Let us consider an example of encoding a URL.
The character count of a certain URL depends on a number of factors such as the use of keywords, the tracking parameters and even the domain branding. There are four correction choices for you. They are 7%, 15%, 25%, and 30%. Each of these parameters will increase the end density of any QR code.
You will certainly want it to keep at the highest, for a simple reason that it will handle more error correction. However, that will not be true in every case. It depends and varies up to a great extent. E. g. if you are using the QR codes on digital displays like a TV set, or even online, then the lower the error correction settings, the better.
Let us have a closer look at it. If you have a URL that is approximately less than 20 characters, then it would be wise to set the error correction to its lowest value – 7%. The reason for this is that the lower correction error will generate a 21X21 code that is the lowest possible one. If you go for highest settings – 30%, which is not required, you are sure to get a 29X29 code.
If you consider closely, the values are 21X21 = 441 and 29X29 = 841. So the highest settings use up nearly twice the space. So always use the QR codes considering all these aspects.
